Well, that fix didn’t last long. I’m utterly perplexed by this. I’ve reset windows firewall rules on the remote pc which worked. For a while. The workgroup vanished again from my main rig. 🙁 . I’ve looked more closely at my main rig and have uninstalled Comodo firewall and gone back to using Windows firewall again. This seems to have cured things. For the moment anyway.

Windows 7 Homegroup vanishing
I have had issues with a Win7 homegroup vanishing (and therefore its shared libraries) from the homegroup list on my main PC. I can still browse shares and remote desktop into this other PC but can’t see it’s Homegroup. Weird thing is if I am sitting at this other PC i can see ALL the other Homegroup members with no issues. After much searching this seems to have solved the issue after i ran it on the remote PC
Sometimes the HomeGroup listening service is disabled.
Best kids android handset

There is an excellent how-to guide here
You can now network unlock it gratis but ebay was quick and easy.

PAC code from Three
Trying to get a PAC code from 3 is exactly that – trying. First time phoning customer services after asking for the PAC code the overseas operator just hung up. The second time when I got through (Dial 333 from mobile then options 1,1,4,2) after repeatedly asking for the PAC, being put on hold for several minutes, being offered iPhone handsets for loyalty etc etc she finally grudgingly sent the code.
The operators don’t make it easy. The sooner it can be done instore or online the better.
GiffGaff here i come….
PACcodes is a useful UK site to walk you through the steps required
Antrim Primary School
Toying with the idea of helping to setup a website for the Primary School. Something like wordpress is ideal as it can be so easily edited and adapted. Now looking for somewhere that could host it…
Sine qua non, or not, as the case may be
Interesting case this morning – abdominal stab wound
Standard ATLS/Surgical dogma is penetrating abdominal injury = absolute indication for laparotomy. However a bit of searching pubmed et al suggests a significant proportion of these type of injuries *could* be managed by expectant observation in a HDU type setting rather than by rushing to theatre. Much depends on local availability of FAST/CT/surgical experience, but it is interesting that penetrating abdominal trauma does not always sine non qua a laparotomy. There appear to be many papers on this so go google……
Infinite loop – amazon.co.uk
Finally fixed an infinite loop with amazon. I’ve used it for years with a hotmail address as my login, but never received ANY emails from them about orders/dispatch confirmations, but the orders arrived so I wasn’t bothered. I tried then recently to change the registered address from hotmail to gmail but got stuck in an endless loop, with none of the password reset options working. I spent 30mins on the phone to support to no avail working through the options. Finally I remembered to check my hotmail blocked senders list an lo and behold amazon.co.uk was on it…Once I whitelisted this I was able to finally reset my amazon login email over to gmail and everything works again 🙂 Kind of my own fault but still not sure why unblocking amazon.co.uk from my hotmail account suddenly allowed everything to work again….one of the little mysteries in life.
Unusual ECGs #1
We had an interesting case yesterday where the ECG looked classically like Wellens Syndrome . Scary thing about this condition is that if the patient is experiencing acute ischaemia the ECG can pseudonormailse – see the with and without pain ECGs here
Learning tips are to watch for the distinctive ECG pattern as described in the links above and also remember you can NEVER have too many ECGs done on a patient 🙂
HP N40L Microserver
Very useful little fileserver. It has been available with £100 cashback from approved resellers in the UK for a couple of years now. I bought my last one from serversplus.com
Watch out for amazon.co.uk sellers as they probably aren’t eligible for the HP cashback offer(selling parallel imported N40Ls) and it will end up costing you more….
The thread that started my interest in these devices is the great ‘Tim’s Tiddler‘ one on avforums. Once you have flashed the BIOS and unlocked the extra speed on the optical drive SATA port you can add even more drives to this little beast. There are x4 3.5″ drive slots in the main bay and in the top 5.25″ section you can have an optical drive, x2 3.5″ or 2.5″ or a combination of the two depends on the brackets you get. I’ve even seen a setup with x6 2.5″ drives in there!. to run a 6th drive you need to use an eSATA to SATA cable and need an extra molex>SATA power splitter
I have installed a passive radeon 6450 and upgraded to 8Gb of RAM although some folk have had success with 16Gb kits
